Great American Cleanup
March 10, 2012
Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest community    
improvement program, takes place annually from March 1 through May 31, involving an
estimated 3.9 million volunteers and participants. The hardworking volunteers     
donated more than 5.7 million hours in 2010 to clean, beautify and improve more than     
33,700 communities during more than 30,000 events in all 50 states and beyond.   
Activities included beautifying parks and recreation areas, cleaning seashores and
waterways, handling recycling collections, picking up litter, planting trees and flowers,
and conducting educational programs and litter-free events.

2013 Keep Charlotte Beautiful Calendar Art Contest
April 20, 2012
Help Keep Charlotte Beautiful (KCB) send a message to Charlotte County residents by   
producing a full color drawing or painting on the theme of “Keep Charlotte Beautiful.”  Students,
Grade K-12, will visualize a correct environmental action and transfer that mental picture into a
work of art.  Possible ways of expanding on this theme could include: litter prevention, clean-up
campaigns, beautification efforts (tree planting or landscaping with native plants, protecting the
environment or recycling.  Thirteen winners (includes a cover winner) will have their artwork and
portrait photo featured in a full-color 2013 calendar to be released in the fall of 2012.


Earth Day

Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's  
natural environment. Earth Day was first observed in the US on April 22, 1970. It is now    
celebrated Internationally on April 22.

National Arbor Day
April 27, 2012
Arbor Day is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care.
Founded by J. Sterling Morton in 1872, it's celebrated on the last Friday in April. Each state
does have its own Arbor Day, which is the optimum planting day for trees in your
state. Florida's is the 3rd Friday in January. For more info go to the

Suggestion on how to celebrate!
•Celebrate Arbor Day in a personal way by planting a tree yourself.    
•Read a book about trees. Learn to identify trees in your yard and neighborhood.
•Enjoy the outdoors. Visit a local park or take a nature hike.
•Attend a class on tree and plant care.
•Volunteer with a local tree-planting organization.

Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup
September 15, 2012
 Over the past 25 years, Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup has
 become the world's largest volunteer effort for ocean health. Nearly nine million
 volunteers from 152 countries and locations have cleaned 145 million pounds of
 trash from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers, and the ocean on just one day
 each year. Please join us and help make a difference through this remarkable   
 experience of international camaraderie on behalf of the ocean.

celebrate America Recycles Day. More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is    
the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling programs in   
the United States. One day to inform and educate. One day to get our neighbors, friends
and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work
together. One day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year.
