| CCSO SHERIFF CAMERON ANNOUNCES “OPERATION GREEN SWEEP” May 18, 2010-Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Cameron announced today an inmate cleanup project called “Operation Green Sweep.” This week-long projects goal is to pick up trash alongside 14 miles of Bermont Road/CR-74 from S.R. 31 to U.S. 17 east of Punta Gorda. More than a ton of trash has been picked up along the first five miles of highway cleaned since Monday morning through noon today. Trash so far has included tires, bottles, cans, mattresses, paper, garbage, vehicle parts, and a lot more. Sheriff Cameron said, “One of our local citizens with property along Bermont Road talked to me last week about the amount of trash in the ditches. So I asked the jail commander to see what we could do using our inmate road cleanup crew. The inmates, along with members of our Volunteer support group, are working on the cleanup this week and are picking up a tremendous amount of trash along that road. Once cleaned up, the water drainage and general public health and safety should be greatly improved. Our inmate cleanup crew is saving thousands of taxpayer dollars in cleaning up the roads of Charlotte County.” The project started Monday morning at Bermont Road and S.R. 31 and according to Corrections Deputy First Class Kevin Baltimore, “We cleaned three miles of road from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and this morning in three hours we collected another trailer full of trash.” The CCSO Special Operations vehicle is positioned at the entrance to the Boy Scout Camp as headquarters for “Operation Green Sweep” on Bermont Road. The Bermont Road clean-up consists of DFC Baltimore, eight sentenced inmates in the Work Release Program, Community Service Aid Volunteers, and Traffic Units. Waste Management is also a partner in this project according to Jail Operations Captain Daniel Kacynski. |
